Why did you write #OrganicJesus?
I began writing #OrganicJesus in 2013 when my wife was pregnant; like a lot of Christians, I would turn on the TV, open magazines, or read books where Christians said things that were sort of...wacky tabacky. I started thinking about what I would say to my son when he said, "Dad, if all those crazy people are Christians, then why are you a Christian?" I pitched it to a few agents--one who helped me create a proposal--but kind of put it on the back-burner. Then in October of 2013, my son died during childbirth. I started working on it again, in part, to help work through grief and just stay busy.
How did you keep faith after the loss of your son?
You can read my answer to that here.
Why so many footnotes?
The footnotes are something I frequently use in a lot of my books. It's really twofold; one, it gives the books an encyclopedic feel; two, it gives it a rush of energy--like there's always something more to say. It's also an attempt to speak to a generation whose mind is more multi-tasked. The late, great, David Foster Wallace perfected the idea of it--if you want to read someone who makes much better use of them than me, I suggest checking him out.
I don't agree with the books message.
Was that a question?
No.
Okay. I'm sorry we don't agree, but I wish you all the best.
Do you speak at churches and / or conferences?
I'm not opposed to the idea, but why don't you ask me privately.
Do you really eat organic?
I try too. Health benefits aside, organic food really taste better. That said, I'm only human and enjoy junk food like the rest of us.
What is your favorite non-organic junk food?
Donuts (The Donuttery in Huntington Beach is my favorite...there's even vegan friend options); that's followed very closely to pizza (if you are ever in Anaheim, Marri's Pizza & Pasta is not to be missed--it's a bit of a hike, but you could walk there from Disneyland). In terms of fast-food eateries, the only chain I frequent is In-N-Out--I don't eat beef, but I love their gjrilled cheese sandwich and animal style fries.
Do you have doubts?
Of course. I'm human. Doubts are natural. What's unfortunate is not doubts--it's that people have doubts and don't try to appease them. God's fine with doubts; seek God and he'll work you through them.
Can you tell me if I'm going to heaven?
That's really between you and God.
What is your next book about?
I have a lot of things in the works. If you want to read them, join the mailing list and I'll let you know when I have more details.
How do I find an agent?
Every agent I've found was through a free website called agentquery.com. Stay away from books; they are usually out-of-date before they're even released. Look for agents eager for new clients.
Will you read / review my book?
Probably not. I have way too much going on. If it's good, you don't need me--if it's not good, I couldn't help you anyway. So you really don't need me. If you still want to ask, go to my contact page.
